OL97: ErrMsg: Can't Open This Item. An OLE Registration Error...

SYMPTOMS

After you install the Microsoft Office 97 Service Release 1 (SR-1) Patch, when you try to open an e-mail message or a Contact, you may receive the following error:

   Can't open this item. An OLE registration error occurred. The program
   is not correctly installed. Run Setup again for the program.

RESOLUTION

Method 1

This may be caused by a setting in a new security feature of the SR-1 Patch. To change this setting, follow these steps:

1. On the Tools menu, click Options.

2. Click the Attachments tab.

3. Change the Security Method to None, and then click OK.

Method 2

This may be caused by incorrect registration of OLE. To re-register, follow these steps:

1. Insert the Office 97 CD.

2. Click the Start button, and then click Run.

3. Type <cd drive letter>:\Setup.exe /y. Click OK
