OL97: How to Create New Entry Type in the Journal

SUMMARY

When you create a manual journal entry there is an option to select the Entry type. The only way to modify or add entries is by modifying the registry. This article describes how to add these entries to the registry.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys And Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and Delete Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it.

Back Up the Registry

1. Click the Start button, click Run, and type regedit. Click OK.

2. In the Registry Editor, click to select the key you want to back up.

3. On the Registry menu, click Export Registry File.

4. In the Save In list, click to select the folder where you want to save

   the backup.

5. In the File Name box, type a name for your backup file, such as
   Options or Backup.

6. In the Export Range box, be sure that Selected Branch is selected.

7. Click Save. The file is saved with a .reg extension.

Edit the Registry to Add an Item

Use the following steps to edit the registry:

1. Click the Start button, and then click Run. Type REGEDIT and then click

   OK.

2. Navigate to the key:

      HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Outlook\Journaling

   With the right mouse-button click Journaling in the above key. Point
   to New and click Key. Type a descriptive name for the key you would
   like as the Journal item.

3. Right-click on the newly created key, point to New and click String
   Value.

4. Click New Value 1 in the right pane of the Registry and press F2.
   Type "Description" (without quotation marks) to rename the key, and
   press ENTER.

5. Double-click the newly created string value and type the name
   of the entry type you would like as a new Journal Item. Click OK.

6. Close the Registry Editor.
