The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Outlook 97

SYMPTOMS

If you use Microsoft Outlook to browse the files on your computer or network, Outlook may appear to hang. This symptom is most apparent after you apply a filter that uses criteria set in the Advanced tab of the Filter dialog box. Outlook may take several minutes (such as 10 or more) to process the filter criteria.

CAUSE

The time used to filter files depends on several factors:

  • The specific condition and value that you set in the Filter dialog box.
  • The number of files in the folder you are browsing.

RESOLUTION

Use the Find command on the Start menu rather than Outlook to search for files that meet specific criteria. For information on using this feature, click the Start button and click Help. Click the Index tab and type "Find Command" and then click Display.

MORE INFORMATION

In Outlook, you can view or open files on your computer as well as on a network drive you are connected to. Click Other, on the Outlook Bar and then click My Computer.

You can apply a filter to your view by going to the View Menu and clicking Filter. Setting any criteria on the Advanced tab may take Outlook a long time to process.

Steps to Reproduce Problem:

  1. In Outlook, click Other on the Outlook Bar.

  2. Click My Computer.

  3. Switch to your Windows folder by double-clicking the C:\ drive and then double-click the Windows folder.

  4. On the View Menu, click Filter and click the Advanced tab.

  5. In Field, type "Modified" (without the quotation marks).

  6. In Condition, select "on or before."

  7. In Value, type "1/1/97" (without the quotation marks).

  8. Click Add to List, and then click OK.

Outlook will filter the file but may appear to hang.
