vCards and Microsoft vReader for Outlook

The vCard specification defines a format for recording information about a person, such as their name, address, telephone number, and e-mail name.

vCard provides an electronic business card format, which allows an individual to identify themselves without restating or rekeying the information. For example, you can use vCards to exchange contact information across the Internet using Web pages or attachments in e-mail messages.

Outlook supports the vCard technology using a free Microsoft vReader for Outlook program. Once installed the vReader allows you to use your Web browser to click a vCard link on a Web page and automatically add the vCard information into a new Outlook contact. You can also open a vCard e-mail attachment directly into a new Outlook contact.

Installing vReader

You can download the Microsoft vReader for Outlook from:

   http://officeupdate.microsoft.com/downloadcatalog/dldoutlook.htm

Download the Msvreadr.exe file to a temporary folder on your hard drive, and using Windows Explorer, double-click to start the setup program.

The vReader installs into your \Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office folder and opens files having a VCF file extension. The vReader parses the VCF file information and automatically places it in a new Outlook contact.

NOTE: Because the Microsoft Web site is constantly updated, the site address may change without notice. If this occurs, link to the Microsoft home page at the following address:
