Why Does MSN 2.0 Installation Change My IE 3.x Proxy Settings?

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Proxy Server versions 1.0 and 2.0

SYMPTOMS

After you install Microsoft Network (MSN) version 2.0, your Microsoft Internet Explorer version 3.01 Proxy Settings (View, Options, Connections, Settings) have been altered. These settings route all MSN links through the Winsock Proxy, rather than the Web Proxy service.

CAUSE

This happens because MSN links use an authentication scheme not supported by the Web Proxy Service. Therefore, all MSN traffic must go through the Winsock Proxy Service.

WORKAROUND

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious, system-wide problems that may require you to reinstall Windows NT to correct them. Microsoft cannot guarantee that any problems resulting from the use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use this tool at your own risk.

Set the following client registry keys to configure IE 3.01 proxy settings to use Web Proxy Service with MSN:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER

     \Software
          \Microsoft
               \Windows
                    \CurrentVersion
                         \InternetSettings
ProxyEnable "1" ProxyOverride "*.msn.com; *.msn.net; *.manga.com; *.manga.net;;" ProxyServer "http://:80"
