"Filename is not Valid" in Chart Template with Text Reference

SYMPTOMS

If you save a chart template from Microsoft Excel that contains attached or unattached text that is an external reference to a cell on a saved worksheet, the error message "Filename is not valid" appears whenever you open the template.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. This problem has been corrected in Microsoft Excel version 5.0.

When you open a Microsoft Excel chart template that contains text (attached or unattached) that is a reference to a cell on a saved worksheet, the filename that appears in the reference is a concatenation of the chart template name and the worksheet name, that is: 

   <template_name>.XLT<filename>.XLS!<cell_ref>
This problem does not occur when the referenced worksheet has not been saved, however, the file must be open for the reference to be valid.
