SYMPTOMS

If you use the Microsoft Windows Sound System Proofreader utility with Microsoft Excel, the following error message may appear when you start Microsoft Excel:

Internal Error at File XLRDR.C, line 1360

When this message appears, you can open and edit worksheets in Microsoft Excel, but the Windows Sound System Proofreader will fail.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when the Ignore Other Applications check box is selected in Microsoft Excel versions 5.0a and 7.0 or when the Ignore Remote Requests check box is selected in version 4.0.

WORKAROUNDS

To prevent this error message from being displayed, follow the appropriate procedure below for your version of Microsoft Excel.

Versions 5.0, 7.0

1. From the Tools menu, choose Options.

2. Select the General tab. Clear the Ignore Other Applications check

   box, and chose OK.

Version 4.0

1. From the Options menu, choose Workspace.

2. Clear the Ignore Remote Requests check box, and choose OK.

This option allows the you to specify that other applications cannot engage in a DDE conversation with Microsoft Excel. If this option is selected, a DDE dialog between Microsoft Excel and the Windows Sound System is not possible.

MORE INFORMATION

The Proofreader utility (PROOF.XLA) for Microsoft Excel establishes remote links between the Windows Sound System and Microsoft Excel using Dynamic Data Exchange or DDE. DDE is a mechanism that permits two applications to "talk" to each other by continuously and automatically exchanging data.
