AAP: Cannot Use UNC Connections When Importing Data

SYMPTOMS

In the Microsoft Accounting Analysis Pack (AAP), when you use the Import Wizard to import accounting files, you are unable to type a UNC path into the Step 2 dialog box.

CAUSE

This behavior is by design of the Microsoft Accounting Analysis Pack (AAP).

WORKAROUND

To import files that are stored on a server, you must first map a drive letter to the appropriate network path. To do this, follow these steps:

1. If the Import Wizard is currently visible on the screen, click Cancel.

2. On the Start menu, point to Programs, and then click Windows Explorer.

3. On the Tools menu, click Map Network Drive.

   The Map Network Drive dialog box appears.

4. In the Drive box, click any available drive letter. Then, in the Path box, type the UNC path for the server to which you are trying to map.

5. Click OK.

6. On the File menu, click Close.

The Import Wizard included with the Microsoft Accounting Analysis Pack allows you to import accounting files into Microsoft Excel.

If you choose to Import an accounting file into Microsoft Excel, the Step 2 dialog box of the Import Wizard, which allows you to determine where the AAP will search for accounting files, will not allow you to enter a UNC (Universal Naming Convention) path to the files you want to import. The dialog box only allows you to choose from a list of already-mapped drive letters.

For example, if your accounting files are stored in a folder called Acctfils on the server Adastra, the UNC path for the files would be \\Adastra\Acctfils. You cannot enter this path into the Step 2 dialog box.

When you use the Import Wizard to import your files, choose the appropriate drive letter from the list of drives in the Step 2 dialog box. Once you are finished importing files, you can unmap the drive letters. To do this, on the Tools menu in Windows Explorer, click Disconnect Network Drive.
