PRB: Inconsistent Use of Shadow Directory Checkin Terminology

The information in this article applies to:

• Microsoft Visual SourceSafe, 16-bit and 32-bit, for Windows, version 4.0

SYMPTOMS

In the Visual SourceSafe Administrator, on the Shadow Directories tab, the "File date/time" drop-down box has three choices: "Current", "Modification", and "Update."

Prior to Visual SourceSafe version 4.0, "Update" was the terminology used for "checking in" a file. As of version 4.0, "Check in" is the terminology used throughout the Visual SourceSafe Explorer.

The terminology used in the Visual SourceSafe Administrator for checking in a file is different than that used in the Visual SourceSafe Explorer (Check In).

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a bug in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this bug and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available

Steps to Reproduce Behavior

1. Run SSADMIN from either the <path to VSS>\WIN or <path to VSS>\WIN32 folder.

2. From the Tools menu, choose Options.

3. Choose the Shadow Directory tab.

4. Set the "Set shadow directory to:" setting, if it is not already set. Note that the "Set shadow directory to:" will not be enabled unless "Set shadow directory for project" has already been set.

5. Drop down the File/date box and note the Update choice.
