BUG: BCP Can't Copy Data If Quotes Used as Terminator

Last reviewed: April 28, 1997
Article ID: Q87478

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft SQL Server version 4.2 for OS/2
BUG# 7329 (4.2)

SYMPTOMS

If an .FMT file includes quotation marks as part of a field or record terminator, the bulk copy program (BCP) cannot copy the data in or out of SQL Server. Instead, you are returned to the command prompt with no messages. The BCP error file is empty and BCP loads no data.

WORKAROUND

To avoid this problem, allow BCP to prompt you for the information. To include a quotation mark (") as part of the field terminator, add a back slash (\) immediately before the quotation mark (\").

Another solution is to use versions 1.x of BCP. These versions are completely self-contained and can be copied onto your version 4.2 server or workstation. Rename the executable file to something similar to OLDBCP.EXE before you copy the new version.

NOTE: You must create a new format file in order to run versions 1.x of BCP successfully.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the bulk copy program version 4.2. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
