BUG: Distribution Task Fails with Dupe Key Error at Subscriber

The information in this article applies to:

Microsoft SQL Server version 6.0

SYMPTOMS

The distribution tasks report failure with error message 2627:

Violation of %s constraint '%.*s': Attempt to insert duplicate key in object '%.*s'.

Depending on the definition of the subscribed table, the error message may alternately be error 2601 or 2626.

The error always occurs after a retry attempt after a deadlock at the subscriber.

WORKAROUND

There are three possible workarounds to this problem:

Set the "commitbatchsize" parameter of the distribution task to a lower value (the default is 100) so that the chances of deadlock at the subscriber are reduced.

Schedule the distribution task at a different time so that it avoids any possible deadlocks at the subscriber.

Monitor and regulate the subscriber activity to avoid any potential deadlocks with the distribution process.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft SQL Server version 6.0. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

This problem does not occur in Microsoft SQL Server version 6.5.
