BUG: Loading a Database from a Write-protected Tape Fails

SYMPTOMS

When trying to load a tape dump, SQL Server reports an error such as:

   3203: Read on Dump Device
   'C:\SYPLUS\SYFILES\WKL_525W.DLL' Failed.

Checking the error log will show a Sytos error 11 (or in some rare cases, tape error 7) like the line below:

   Sytos tape error 11 in module
   S:\dbms\os2\ksource\strmio\tbs.c at line 2012

CAUSE

The tape is write-protected.

WORKAROUND

Remove the write-protection from a tape prior to doing the restore.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in SQL Server version 4.2 for OS/2. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
