Changing the File Format from Lotus 1-2-3 to Excel

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, versions 2.x, 3.0, 4.0, 5.0
  • Microsoft Excel for OS/2, versions 2.2, 2.21, and 3.0

SYMPTOMS

When converting a Lotus 1-2-3 file format to an Excel file format, manually changing the extension from .WKS, .WK1 or .WK3 to .XLS during a Save does not work correctly. Any changes made to the file, such as formating, will not save.

WORKAROUND

You must use the following procedure to save a Lotus file in Excel file format:

  1. Load the Lotus file into Excel.

  2. From the File menu, choose the Save As command.

  3. Select Options.

  4. Choose Normal, then press ENTER.

Microsoft Excel 5.0 ------------------- Choose Microsoft Excel Workbook, then press ENTER.

A common symptom of incorrect conversion is that formatting changes will not be saved if you do not use the File Save As command.
