Combining Number Scaling and Scientific Notation UAEs in Excel

Last reviewed: November 2, 1994

SUMMARY

Combining number scaling and scientific notation in a number format will cause Excel to terminate. For example, formatting a cell with the number format "0,E+00" and then typing a number will cause Excel to give a "System Error - Divide by Zero" message and terminate.

MORE INFORMATION

Steps to Reproduce Problem

  1. In Excel 3.00, with any cell on a sheet active, choose Number from the Format menu.

  2. In the Format box, type

          0,E+00

    and choose OK.

  3. Type the number 1035 (or any four-digit number) into the cell.

Results

The "System Error - Divide by Zero" dialog message appears on the screen. Excel is terminated. On some systems, this is immediately followed by an endless string of Unrecoverable Application Error (UAE) messages.

Microsoft is researching this problem and will post new information here as it becomes available.
