Corrupted Font Files May Hang Excel During Print Preview

Excel may hang when print previewing a document if the preview font being used is corrupt.

To test this, do the following:

  1. Select the entire document.

  2. Change the font to a different font.

  3. Preview the document.

If Excel does not hang, the previous preview font was corrupt.

When print previewing a document, Excel displays a reduced view of the entire page. The preview font used is a small font that is substituted for the font used in the normal view. If the preview font is corrupt, Excel may crash.

Changing the fonts used in the document causes Excel to use a different miniature font for the print preview and not the suspected corrupt font. However, Excel may use the same preview font for different normal fonts. As a result, while testing this problem, you may want to try changing the worksheet's font more than once.

Solution

If you determine that the preview font has been corrupted, you will need to reinstall Excel to obtain a new PREV.FON file.
