Data Extract Will Not Use Highlighted Area in Excel

SUMMARY

When you highlight a range of database titles and select Extract from the Data menu, the Extract dialog box prompts you for unique records only. However, when you choose OK, nothing happens.

Solution

  1. From the Formula menu, choose Define Name.

  2. Delete the name "Extract" from the List Of Names in the Define Name dialog box.

This behavior occurs when an extract range has been set. Microsoft Excel is performing a data extract somewhere else on the worksheet, using a defined name for the range of database titles.

Another way to verify this is to choose Goto from the Formula menu. If the name "Extract" appears, select it and choose OK. This should select the range that is defined as the name "Extract".

When you choose Extract from the Data menu, Microsoft Excel first looks to the list of defined names in a worksheet to see if the name "Extract" has been defined. If it does not find this defined name, it defaults to the currently selected area.

By deleting this name, you will be forcing Microsoft Excel to use the area you have selected for the Extract range.
