ACC: Error Generated When You Rename a File

SYMPTOMS

Novice: Requires knowledge of the user interface on single-user computers.

When you try to rename a file in Microsoft Access, you may receive the following error message:

Not a valid document name:''


   -or- 

The object name '' doesn't follow Microsoft Access object-naming rules


CAUSE

In Microsoft Access for Windows 95 version 7.0:

When you have a Database window open and click Rename on the Edit menu, but do not enter a name for the selected object, pressing ENTER will generate the following error message:

In Microsoft Access 1.x and 2.0:

Dialog boxes that are provided with Windows disable the OK button if an expected entry is not made. This particular dialog box is not provided by Windows. Microsoft Access does not disable the OK button in this dialog box when there is no entry in the field. If you click the OK button without entering a name, you will receive the following error message:
Not a valid document name:''


RESOLUTION

You must enter a new name for the object.


STATUS

This behavior is by design.
