Excel Category Axis Labels Hidden by Negative Value Columns

SUMMARY

If you attach labels to a category axis in a chart that has negative values, the columns that have values below 0 (zero) cover the category axis titles.

To view the labels, do one of the following:

  1. Change the background color of the "missing" data points by selecting the category axis, choosing Font from the Format menu, and selecting the White Out Background option in the Font dialog box. This option changes the area surrounding the label text to white so the label text is more clearly visible.

  2. Move the category labels to the area above or below the chart plotting area by selecting the category axis, then choosing Patterns from the Format menu. In the Patterns dialog box, select Tick Labels, then select High to place the labels above the chart or Low to place them below the chart.
