The information in this article applies to:
  • Excel for Windows, versions 2.x, 3.0 and 4.0
  • Excel for OS/2, versions 2.x and 3.0

SUMMARY

When using a chart linked via DDE to a data feed, if the size of the chart window is approximately half the size of the screen or larger, everything in the chart window redraws (or flashes), including the axes labels and legends when the data is updated. If, however, the chart window is any smaller than this, only the actual data bars update when there is a change (a preferable situation).

MORE INFORMATION

When Excel creates a chart, it stores that chart information in a cache. When the chart needs redrawing, Excel uses this cache so that the entire chart does not need to be redrawn. As the chart gets larger, it will no longer fit into this cache, and the entire chart must be redrawn when data changes.
