Excel Err Msg: "Cannot Find XLRDR.DLL" at Startup

SYMPTOMS

When you load Microsoft Excel, you may receive the following error message:

Cannot find XLRDR.DLL

This error may be followed by an Open dialog box.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, edit the EXCEL4.INI file (or EXCEL5.INI file if you are using Microsoft Excel version 5.0) in Windows Notepad and either remove or remark out (precede the line with a semicolon) the line that loads the PROOF.XLA file. This line will resemble the following:

Open9= /F C:\EXCEL\LIBRARY\PROOF.XLA

The XLRDR.DLL file is used by the Microsoft Windows Sound System ProofReader utility, PROOF.XLA, which is installed by the Windows Sound System. The XLRDR.DLL file is found in the Windows Sound System directory (SNDSYS).

You can install the ProofReader utility when you install the Windows Sound System. This utility allows you to proofread different data types that you select. The setup program adds an entry to the EXCEL4.INI file (or EXCEL5.INI file if you are using Microsoft Excel version 5.0) that loads the PROOF.XLA add-in macro. This entry is not deleted from the EXCEL4.INI file (or EXCEL5.INI file if you are using Microsoft Excel version 5.0) when the Windows Sound System files are removed.
