Excel Setup Attempted from Locked Disk Causes System Error -49

SUMMARY

If you launch the Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh version 3.0 Setup from a locked diskette that has not been personalized, Setup returns a locked disk error after you enter personalization information. If you unlock the disk and attempt to run the Excel Setup program without restarting the computer, the setup program may return system error -49 "File System Error, Unable to Continue operation."

To correct this problem, use the following steps:

  1. Make sure the write-protected tab on the Setup disk is closed.

  2. Restart the computer.

  3. Launch the Microsoft Excel Setup program and continue installation.

MORE INFORMATION

System error -49 is returned if you attempt a procedure on a file that is currently open with write permission.

Upon initial insertion of a disk, the Macintosh system reads certain information about the contents and status of the disk (such as, the number of files, whether the files are locked or unlocked, and so forth). Other information about the contents of the disk (for example, what files are open) is stored in memory as well. Ejecting and reinserting a disk does not always reset all information stored in memory about that contents of the disk.

When disk personalization is interrupted because the disk is locked, Word aborts the installation procedure without resetting all disk information in memory. The only way to purge erroneous information from memory is to restart the computer.
