XL98: Excel Quits When You Add Shadow to Series in Surface Chart

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition, if you run a Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications macro that attempts to add a shadow to a series in a chart, the program may shut down unexpectedly without displaying any error messages.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if you attempt to add a shadow to a series in a 3-D surface chart.

RESOLUTION

To prevent this problem from occurring, do not use a macro to add a shadow to a series in a 3-D surface chart. If you do not know what type of chart you will be working with, you may need to modify your macro so it checks the type of the chart before attempting to add a shadow to a series within the chart.

STATUS

By design, you cannot add a shadow to a series in a 3-D surface chart in Microsoft Excel.

The line of Visual Basic code that causes the error is similar to the following: 

   ActiveChart.SeriesCollection(1).Shadow = True
In earlier versions of Microsoft Excel, you will receive the following error message if you run this line of code when the active chart is a 3-D Surface chart: 

   Run-time error '1000':
   Series does not have Shadow property
