Excel: Arrow Overwrites Unattached Text

SUMMARY

After saving and reopening a chart in Microsoft Excel, regardless of prior position, any arrows on the chart will move to the front. This is because arrows are always drawn last when a chart is opened. Thus, arrows may be drawn through text when a chart is opened, even though the text covers the arrows when the chart is closed.

To create a text object with the appearance of one line crossing behind the text:

  1. From the Chart menu, choose Add Arrow to create an arrow. Drag this arrow a short distance and click elsewhere in the chart to deselect the arrow. Choose Add Arrow again to create a second arrow.

  2. Select one of the arrows and choose Patterns from the Format menu.

  3. Under Arrow Head Style, click the left box (the line without a head) and click OK. The head should disappear from the selected arrow.

  4. Position the two lines (arrows) on top of each other.

  5. Shorten each line so neither one intersects the text.
