Excel: Cannot Return Maximized Chart Object to Word

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, versions 3.0 and 4.0.

SYMPTOMS

When you are using the 8514/a video mode in Microsoft Excel, a chart object created using Excel's Copy Picture command with the Appearance option Shown As Printed and the Size option As Shown On Screen may not update properly in Microsoft Word if the chart is maximized in Excel. This occurs because the resulting picture is larger than the maximum size represented in Microsoft Word.

WORKAROUND

  • When you are creating an Excel chart object with these options and the 8514/a video mode, do not maximize the chart.
  • Use a different video mode by changing drivers. Microsoft Windows operating environment version 3.1 1024x768 or VGA drivers will not have this problem.

Steps to Reproduce Problem

With 8514/a video mode:

  1. Create a chart in Excel.

  2. Start Microsoft Word.

  3. From the Edit menu, choose Insert Object. Select the Microsoft Excel Chart option. Choose the OK button.

  4. Double Click on the chart object. This activates Excel.

  5. Add a Title to the chart.

  6. Maximize the chart window.

  7. Close the chart window from the child window system menu, not from Excel's File menu.

The chart does not update in Word. It will remain hidden indefinitely without any alert message.
