Excel: Clicking Auto-Fill Handle Causes General Protection

SYMPTOMS

Under certain circumstances, in version 4.0 of Microsoft Excel for Windows, clicking the Auto-Fill handle when entire columns are selected causes a General Protection Fault in Windows 3.1 or an Unrecoverable Application Error in Windows 3.0.

WORKAROUND

If you encounter this problem, the only way to work around it is to select only the cells to be filled, not the entire column.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Excel version 4.0. This problem is corrected in Microsoft Excel for Windows version 4.0a.
