Excel: Courier Displays as a Proportional Font

SYMPTOMS

In the versions of Microsoft Excel listed above, the Courier printer font displays as a proportional font when connected to a Hewlett-Packard (HP) DeskJet driver in Windows 3.1. The Courier printer font on the HP DeskJet is a fixed length font and will print as such. However, when you choose the Courier printer font, a proportional font appears on the screen.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the versions of Microsoft Excel listed above. This problem was corrected in version 5.0 of Microsoft Excel for Windows.

MORE INFORMATION

This does not occur in Windows 3.0. Microsoft Excel documents that were formatted with the Courier printer font in Windows 3.0 may display incorrectly in Windows 3.1 since the proportional font is spaced differently. However, Microsoft Excel prints the document correctly using the fixed length printer font.

WORKAROUND

Format the document using Courier New, a true type font.
