Excel: Creating Date, Year, Month, and Day Series in Worksheet

SUMMARY

To create a series of dates, months, years, or days of the week in Microsoft Excel, follow the appropriate procedure below.

To create a series of dates, follow these steps:

  1. Type the first date in the series into a cell (for example, A1).

  2. Select that cell (in this case, A1).

  3. From the Data menu, choose Series.

  4. If you want a column of dates, select Series In Columns. If you want a row of dates, select Series In Rows.

  5. Under Type, verify Date is selected.

  6. Under Date Unit, choose the unit you want (Day, Weekday, Month, Year).

  7. Enter the final date in Stop Value.

  8. Click the OK button.

To create a series of months, follow the steps for creating a series of dates with the following modifications:

  1. In the first cell, place the first day of the month desired (for example, 3/1/90 for March).

  2. Choose Month in step 6 above.

  3. Select the cells with dates.

  4. From the Format menu, choose Number.

  5. Type in "mmmm" (without quotation marks) in the Format box. Click the OK button.

To create a series of years, follow the steps for creating a series of dates with the following modifications:

  1. In the first cell, place the first day of the year desired (for example, 1/1/1990).

  2. Choose Year in step 6 above.

  3. Select the cells with the dates.

  4. From the Format menu, choose Number.

  5. Type "yyyy" (without quotation marks) in the Format box. Click the OK button.

To create a series of days, follow the steps for creating a series of dates with the following modifications:

  1. In the first cell, type a date that gives the desired first day of the week (for example, for Monday, you could use the date 11/18/91).

  2. Choose either Weekday or Day in step 6 above.

  3. Select the cells with the dates.

  4. From the Format menu, choose Number.

  5. Type "dddd" (without quotation marks) in the Format box. Click the OK button.
