Excel: Data Point Label Appears Above the Top of a Chart

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

A data point label may appear above the top of a chart if you have rescaled the y axis so the point the label is attached to is above the upper limit of the y axis scale. The label will appear in the title area of the chart as though the chart area continued beyond the end of the y axis.

WORKAROUND

Rescale the y axis so the data point the label is attached to is within the scale of the y axis. Alternatively, you can delete the label by selecting it and choosing Delete from the Edit Menu.

Steps to Reproduce Problem

Enter the following into a worksheet:


      A1:  1
      A2:  2
      A3:  4

Select cells A1:A3 and choose New from the File menu. Select Chart and choose OK.

Choose Attach Text from the Chart menu. Select Title and choose OK.

Again, choose Attach Text from the Chart menu. Select Series and Data Point. Type 1 in the Series number box and 3 in the Point number box. Choose OK.

Select the y axis and choose Scale from the Format menu. Change the Upper Limit from 4 to 3.5.

You will see the number 4 above the chart range to the right of Title.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the versions of Microsoft Excel listed above. We are researching this problem, and will post more information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
