Excel: Desktop Granularity May Affect Tutorial

SUMMARY

Certain lessons in the Microsoft Excel "Learning Microsoft Excel" tutorial may display incorrectly if the Granularity setting in the Microsoft Windows Desktop control panel is set to any value other than zero. In particular, the demonstration of the use of the Data Form in the "Using a Database" lesson may be rendered unusable by this problem.

Higher Granularity settings make the problem more noticeable. To eliminate the problem, set Granularity to a lower value.

This is by design since the sizing grid you choose in the Windows Desktop control panel affects application windows and icons. The Data Form is an application window and therefore affected.

Steps to Exhibit the Problem

1. Run the Microsoft Windows Control Panel application. In Control Panel, go into Desktop to access the Desktop settings.

2. Change Granularity to 10. Select OK to exit the Desktop control panel. Close Control Panel.

3. In Microsoft Excel, select Learning Microsoft Excel from the Help menu.

4. In the Learning Microsoft Excel main screen, select the "Using a Database" button.

5. Proceed through the lesson until the following instruction appears:

        "From the Data menu, choose Form."
   

6. Press the Page Down key or select the "Demo: PgDn" button.
