Excel: Displaying Decimals in a Chart with Worksheet Closed

SUMMARY

In Microsoft Excel, to display the desired number of decimal places in a chart while the supporting worksheet is closed, open the supporting worksheet and select Precision As Displayed from the Sheet Options group in the Options Calculation dialog box.

This forces Excel to save the values with the same number of decimals that are displayed in the worksheet. These formatted numbers will then be reflected in the chart.

Note: A format containing dollar signs ($) will not display the dollar signs when the worksheet is closed, even if Precision As Displayed is selected. Only the number of decimal places will be retained.

Any values on an Excel chart will display the formatting of the worksheet that it is linked to when the worksheet is open.

When the worksheet is closed, the linked information will appear unformatted in the chart if the number format is not one of Excel's predefined number formats. Linked worksheets do not retain number formatting when the supporting sheet is closed.
