Excel: Excluding the Plus Sign from Scientific Notation

Last reviewed: November 2, 1994
Article ID: Q63260

SUMMARY

When formatting a number to appear in scientific notation, the number appears with a plus sign (for example, 12E+5).

To change this format, do the following:

  1. From the Format menu, choose Number.

  2. Enter "0.00E-0" in the Format box.

The number will now appear as 12E5 (12E-5, if it is a decimal).

For more information on formatting numbers, see pages 180-182 in the "Microsoft Excel User's Guide" version 3.0 manual. If you are using Excel 2.20, see pages 303-308 in the "Microsoft Excel Reference" version 2.2 manual.
