Excel: Linked Chart Shrinks When Window Is Minimized

Last reviewed: September 12, 1996

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, version 4.0.

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel for Windows version 4.0, a chart that is linked to another application will be dramatically reduced in size if the chart window is minimized in Microsoft Excel.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the versions of Microsoft Excel listed above. This problem was corrected in version 5.0 of Microsoft Excel for Windows.

WORKAROUND

To display the chart in the desired size, do one of the following:

  • Disable the option to automatically update links (if the dependent application has this type of feature available). The chart in the dependent application will not be automatically updated when the chart is changed in Microsoft Excel. Therefore, the size of the chart will not be changed when the Microsoft Excel chart window is minimized.

    -or-

  • Restore or maximize the chart window in Microsoft Excel.

Note: Different copy and paste format options (such as picture or bitmap) have no effect on this problem.
