Excel: Macros Run Slowly on Macintosh Portable or Notebook

SUMMARY

The Macintosh Portable may switch into a power-saving mode when you run a macro in Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh. The processor speed reduces from 16 megahertz to 1 megahertz, and the speed of macro execution slows accordingly.

This problem is not caused by Microsoft Excel. The Macintosh Portable is designed such that the power-saving mode, called "system sleep", is automatically invoked after a period of inactivity.

You can disable the power-saving mode using the following procedure:

  1. From the Apple menu, choose Control Panel(s).

  2. Click the Portable Control Panel icon.

  3. Hold down the OPTION key, and click Minutes Until Automatic Sleep.

  4. In the dialog box that appears, select the Don't Rest option.

  5. Choose the OK button and close the Control Panel.

You can perform this operation without exiting Microsoft Excel or restarting the Macintosh.

The procedure is described on page 50 of the "Macintosh Portable Owner's Guide" from Apple. This information is also applicable to Apple's notebook computers.
