Excel: Memory Overflow May Occur When Printing to Laserjet II

SUMMARY

When printing a full-page spreadsheet that has the gridlines turned on or has the majority of the page formatted with borders, the printer gives a memory-overflow error message and part of the gridlines or borders is lost from the bottom of the page. The gridlines or borders appear on a separate page.

This behavior occurs when printing from Microsoft Excel to the Hewlett-Packard (HP) LaserJet Series II with 512K of memory. The printer cannot print a full page of graphics with this amount of memory. With gridlines and borders, the print job is considered a full-page graphic.

NOTE: This behavior can also occur using an HP Laserjet III with one meg of memory, if there are lots of borders.

A possible solution to this problem is to set the print resolution to a lower setting, such as 150 dpi, as follows:

  1. From the File menu, choose Printer Setup.

  2. Select Setup to modify the settings for the HP LaserJet driver.

This behavior occurs while running under both Microsoft Windows 2.x and Microsoft Windows 3.0. It has been tested using Microsoft Excel versions 2.1, 3.0, and 4.0, and could conceivably occur in other applications. It occurs in both portrait and landscape mode.
