Article ID: Q78782
Summary:

If you open multiple linked Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh version 3.0 documents from the Finder, you may receive the following error message:

   Update references to unopened documents?

With System 7.0, the message appears once for each document that contains links to unopened files. With System 6.0, the message appears only once for the entire set of selected documents. This difference is the result of a modification to the way files are opened under System 7.0.

More Information:

To avoid receiving this error message, open the Excel files in such a way that supporting documents are already open when their dependent documents are opened. In other words, if Worksheet A is dependent on Worksheet B, then open Worksheet B before opening Worksheet A by using the following procedure:

  1. From the menu bar, choose the Finder. From the View menu, choose By Icon or By Small Icon for the window that contains the files.

  2. Select Worksheet B.

  3. Hold down the SHIFT key and select Worksheet A.

  4. From the File menu, choose Open.

You can also save an Excel Workspace so that dependent documents are opened first. For more information on the order of files saved in a workspace, query on the following words:

   workspace and order and files
