Excel: Name Defined As Constant Won't Link to Closed Worksheet

SUMMARY

Linking to closed worksheets requires that the links contain only simple references (absolute references with no formulas).

Page 434 of the "Microsoft Excel Reference" manual gives the following example of a simple external reference:

   =BUDGET!Inflation
   (if the name Inflation refers
to a cell, range, or constant)

This is incorrect. If the above defined name "Inflation" refers to a text string or constant value, Excel gives the error message "'Inflation' on 'Budget': not defined or too complex" when the document named "Budget" is not open.
