SUMMARY

With two columns of data selected, if New Chart is chosen from the File menu in Microsoft Excel version 3.00, Excel should prompt you to input whether the first column is data, labels, or X values for a scatter (X-Y) chart. If any value in that first column is text, Excel will assume the first column is labels and will not prompt you.

If Excel is not prompting for the first column values, verify that every value is a number, not text.

To see whether the values are numbers or text, do the following:

  1. Select the first column of data.

  2. From the Format menu, choose Alignment.

  3. Select General and click OK.

In the General alignment format, numbers align to the right while text aligns to the left.
