Excel: Pasting Bound Charts into Slide Show Add-in

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel, when you paste a bound chart into the Slide Show Add- in, if the chart name has been changed to include a space, you will receive the following error message: 

   The contents of the clipboard cannot be pasted as a slide.
This same problem occurs when you double-click an embedded chart and you then attempt to copy it into a Slide Show slide.

CAUSE

When you double-click an embedded chart, the chart window contains the name of your worksheet followed by a space and a chart title (for example: "Sales.xls Chart 1"). The spaces in this modified title cause the same problem as spaces in a workbook title.

WORKAROUNDS

To paste the chart to the slide, the document name must be defined with MS-DOS filename conventions.

To work around this problem, do either of the following:

  • Rename the chart so that it conforms to the MS-DOS naming conventions. For example, use dashes and underscores in place of spaces.

    -or-

  • After you double-click the embedded chart to bring it up in a chart window, save the chart with a new name and copy from the saved chart.

NOTE: When you save your chart, Microsoft Excel saves a copy but doesn't change the name on the window you have open. After saving your chart, you need to open the saved chart and copy from the saved chart to the slide.
