The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows operating system versions 3.1, 3.11

SYMPTOMS

The PC-Speaker driver (SPEAKER.DRV) available through Microsoft Download Service (MSDL) may not install from Control Panel properly.

CAUSE

Control Panel requires an OEMSETUP.INF file to install unlisted sound drivers. If Control Panel does not recognize the SPEAKER.DRV file, the OEMSETUP.INF file may be corrupt or missing.

WORKAROUND

  1. Copy the SPEAKER.DRV file into the Windows SYSTEM subdirectory.

  2. Add the following line to the [drivers] section of the SYSTEM.INI file:

         [drivers]
         WAVE=SPEAKER.DRV

  3. Save the changes and restart Windows.

When Windows starts, the speaker driver initializes itself, creates a new section called [Speaker.drv] in the SYSTEM.INI file, and adds some settings in this new section. For an explanation of these new settings, query on the following words here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

   system.ini and entries and pc-speaker

The PC-Speaker driver may not produce high-quality sound on all computer systems. The performance of the PC-Speaker driver is largely dependent upon the hardware itself. Microsoft does not guarantee that the speaker driver will work with all computer systems.
