Excel: Select Last Cell Chooses Cell Beyond Active Region

SUMMARY

It is possible that Microsoft Excel will consider a cell beyond the region being used as the last cell in use.

In Excel version 2.20 and later, this behavior does not affect memory because Excel allocates memory only for cells that contain something.

In Excel versions 1.50 and earlier, this behavior does affect memory. Excel versions 1.50 and earlier allocate memory for every cell between the last active cell and A1.

In most cases, the following procedure will delete those extra rows and/or columns:

  1. Select the extra rows and choose Delete from the Edit menu.

  2. Select cell A1.

  3. Close the worksheet and click OK when asked "Save changes in <filename>?".

  4. Reopen the worksheet, select the extra columns and choose Delete from the Edit menu.

  5. Repeat steps 2 and 3.

  6. Reopen the worksheet and check the position of the last cell.
