Excel: Using Numbers for Series Names or Categories in Chart

SUMMARY

In Microsoft Excel, to create a chart with numbers (such as the years 1987, 1988, etc.) for the series names (or categories), do the following:

  1. Select all the columns of information so that the series names are the first row in the selection (or so that the categories are in the first column in the selection).

  2. From the Edit menu, choose Copy.

  3. From the File menu, choose New.

  4. Select Chart and click OK.

  5. From the Edit menu, choose Paste Special.

  6. Select Series Names In First Row (or Categories In First Column) and click OK.

Two other options are as follows:

  1. Enter the series names (or categories) as text by pressing OPTION+SPACEBAR before each series name (or category).

  2. Enter the series names (or categories) within quotation marks following an equal sign (="1987").
