Errors on PCIC-Compatible PCMCIA Controller in Device Manager

SYMPTOMS

After you install Windows 95 OEM Service Release 2 (OSR2) or Windows 98, Device Manager may display a PCIC-compatible PCMCIA controller with an exclamation point in a yellow circle.


CAUSE

This behavior can occur if you have a CardBus PCMCIA controller. These controllers are initialized by the BIOS to PCIC-compatible mode for backward compatibility. After Windows is installed, it disables PCIC compatibility mode in the BIOS and configures the controller to CardBus mode, but does not remove the PCIC-compatible controller from Device Manager.


RESOLUTION

Remove the PCIC-compatible controller. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. In Device Manager, click the PCIC-compatible controller to select it.


  2. Click Remove and then click Yes.


  3. Click OK.

CardBus controllers are designed to be compatible with older Intel PCIC controllers. In order to also be compatible with older versions of Windows, BIOS vendors sometimes initialize the controller in PCIC- compatible mode.

When this occurs, Windows Setup detects a PCIC controller. Windows recognizes the CardBus controller and disables PCIC Compatibility mode and configures the controller to CardBus mode. Therefore, the PCIC-compatible controller in Device Manager displays the symptoms listed above.
