This article describes how to close a folder and all of its parent folders in a single action.

If you have opened many levels of folders, you can close a folder and all of its parent folders by pressing and holding down either SHIFT key while you click the Close button in the upper right corner of the folder's window.

For an example of how this action works, follow these steps:

Double-click My Computer.

Double-click drive C, double-click the Windows folder, and then double-click the Command folder.

Press down and hold either SHIFT key while you click the Close button in the upper right corner of the Command folder's window.

Note that for this action to work, Windows must be set to browse folders using a separate window for each folder. To set this option in Windows 95, double-click My Computer, click Options on the View menu, and click the Folder tab. To set this option in Windows 98, double-click My Computer, click Folder Options on the View menu, click Settings on the General tab, click "Open each folder in its own window," click OK, and then click OK.
