The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, version 4.0

SYMPTOMS

In version 4.0 of Microsoft Excel for Windows, one name is dropped from the list of open document windows if the Info Window is enabled with more than eight windows open.

The missing document window name returns to the list when the Info Window is closed.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the versions of Microsoft Excel listed above. This problem was corrected in version 5.0 of Microsoft Excel for Windows.

MORE INFORMATION

Excel lists up to nine open document window names on the Window menu. If more than nine windows are open, Excel adds the More Windows command to the Window menu. When you choose More Windows, Excel displays a list of all open document window names.

The Info Window displays information about the active cell on a worksheet or macro sheet. The name Info:<window name> replaces one of the nine names listed on the Window menu when the Info Window is active. However, the name replaced by the Info Window name doesn't show on the list when you choose the More Windows command.

WORKAROUND

The only way to return the missing document window name to the list is to close the Info Window.

To close the Info Window:

If the Info Window is the active window, choose Close from the File menu or double-click the control bar in the upper left corner of the Info Window.

-or-

If it's not the active window:

  1. From the Options menu, choose Workspace.

  2. Clear the Info Window option check box.

Steps to Reproduce Problem

  1. Open nine separate document windows.

Note: You can open a single document and then open 9 separate windows for it by choosing New Window from the Window menu nine times.

  2. From the Options menu, choose Workspace.

  3. Enable the Info Window option by selecting the Info Window checkbox in the Workspace Options dialog box.

  4. Choose the OK button.

  5. From the Windows menu, choose More Windows.

  6. Note that one of your currently open document windows is missing from the displayed list.

  7. Choose the OK button.

  8. Close the Info Window.

  9. Click once on the Windows menu to see all nine of your open document windows listed on the menu.
