Inserting Microsoft Excel Object into Microsoft Word Fails

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to insert a Microsoft Excel worksheet into a Microsoft Word document by clicking Object on the Insert menu, you may receive one of the following error messages:

   The server application, source file, or item cannot be found. Make
   sure the application is properly installed, and that it has not been
   deleted, moved, or renamed.

   -or-

   The action cannot be completed because Unknown is busy.

If you click Retry, you may receive the following error in a Dr. Watson dialog box:

   Access violation c0000005, 0x217134d in RPCSS.EXE

CAUSE

This problem occurs if you load the following Microsoft Excel add-ins:

   Analysis Toolpak - VBA
   Autosave

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, use either of the following methods, depending on the version of Microsoft Office you are using.

Method 1 - Microsoft Office 95

Make sure Microsoft Excel is running when you insert the Microsoft Excel worksheet object into the Microsoft Word document.

NOTE: If you have problems starting Microsoft Excel after receiving one of the error messages listed in this article, save your work if necessary, shutdown, and then restart Microsoft Windows NT.

Method 2 - Microsoft Office 97

Unload the Microsoft Excel add-ins mentioned in the "Cause" section. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. In Microsoft Excel, click Add-ins on the Tools menu.

  2. Click to clear the check boxes for the Analysis Toolpak - VBA and the Autosave add-ins.

  3. Shutdown and restart Windows NT.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base, as it becomes available.
