Lotus Spreadsheet Partially Loads in Excel 3.0

SUMMARY

Some Lotus spreadsheets will attempt to load, but fail at between 0 and 10 percent. One possible solution is to clear the defined name PRINT_AREA in the Lotus sheet before you attempt to load it into Excel 3.0.

MORE INFORMATION

The same Lotus sheet will load correctly into earlier versions of Excel. The problem arises when you have the following three conditions:

  1. If you have a defined name PRINT_AREA in your Lotus sheet

  2. If you have another defined name that refers to part of the area in which PRINT_AREA has been defined

  3. If you have set a print range anywhere in the Lotus sheet

The easiest and quickest way to enable the sheet to load properly in Excel 3.0 is to clear the defined name PRINT_AREA. However, you can also take the Lotus sheet into an earlier version of Excel and save it there. At this point, the file (.XLS) should load correctly into Excel 3.0.

Microsoft is researching this problem and will post new information here as it becomes available.
