Calling Card and Area Code Not Dialed Using Both TAPI Options

SYMPTOMS

When you are dialing from a TAPI-enabled program (such as Dial-Up Networking or HyperTerminal), neither the calling card number nor the long distance area code are dialed when you have both of the following options enabled:

• Dial Using Calling Card
• Dial As A Long Distance Call

RESOLUTION

Manually add the calling card and area code numbers to the phone number to be dialed from the Preview or Connect window just before dialing. Note that this does not permanently change the number to be dialed.

If the program supports it, you can also turn off telephony dialing properties and manually enter the exact number you want dialed (Dial-Up Networking allows this).

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Windows NT versions 4.0 We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

You can use the Dial As A Long Distance Call option when the number being dialed is in the same area code from which you are dialing. This forces the dialing of the area code, even though the phone number is in the same area code.

You can also enable the Dial Using Calling Card option so that a special series of numbers is dialed before the phone number to use a particular phone service (for example, to use AT&T Direct Dial).

Initially, when both options are enabled, the preview for the number to be dialed may appear correctly in the Dialing Properties dialog box. However, once the settings have been applied to the entry, the Dialing Properties dialog box does not show the correct string to be dialed and the credit card number and area code are not dialed.
