The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows NT operating system version 3.1
  • Microsoft Windows NT Advanced Server version 3.1

SYMPTOMS

An HP 35480A DAT tape backup with a DPT 2022 SCSI controller performs backups but generates this message when you try to restore or verify the backup:

   Fatal Error on Drive 1

Another tape drive and controller may restore and verify the tape with no errors.

CAUSE

This is caused by an outdated firmware revision on the DPT 2022 controller. (The HP 35480A rev 9.49 does not require a firmware update.)

RESOLUTION

Contact DPT or your hardware manufacturer for SMARTCOM BT-0002-002C5. Use it to replace SMARTCOM BT-0002-002B1. (The revision number is located on the single ROM chip in the corner of the adapter which is closest to the external SCSI connector and the EISA bus connector).
