FTP Server May Not Allow Any Connections

• Microsoft Windows NT operating system version 3.1
• Microsoft Windows NT Advanced Server version 3.1

SYMPTOMS

A File Transfer Protocol (FTP) client may not be able to connect to a Windows NT FTP Server even though the user account is valid and the Allow Only Anonymous Connections option is not selected.

CAUSE

If Allow Anonymous Connections and Allow Only Anonymous Connections are both selected and then Allow Anonymous Connections is disabled, then the Allow Only Anonymous Connections option will be unavailable (gray).

However, the Allow Only Anonymous Connections option will still be in effect because it is not updated properly in the Registry, and therefore no FTP clients will be allowed to connect to the FTP Server.

RESOLUTION

To resolve the problem, use the following steps:

1. Open Control Panel and in the FTP Server setup, select Allow Anonymous Connections and clear Allow Only Anonymous Connections.

2. Close Network Setup and restart the computer.

3. Disable the Allow Anonymous Connections option if desired.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Windows NT version 3.1 and Windows NT Advanced Server version 3.1. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
