Full Screen Text Flashes with QVision Drivers

Article ID: Q113565

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows NT operating system version 3.1
  • Microsoft Windows NT Advanced Server version 3.1

SYMPTOMS

When using a Compaq QVision adapter with the QVision drivers supplied with the Windows NT operating system, text flashes or blinks in a full screen command prompt.

CAUSE

Screen colors (for text, background, and other elements) have a high- intensity attribute, which when activated makes colors brighter and more vivid. But high-intensity background colors make text blink when the display mode is changed to full screen.

WORKAROUND

There are two ways to stop this from happening:

  • choose a background color for which the high-intensity attribute is not set
  • choose a driver other than the QVision

Since QVision drivers provide the high resolution and color depths most often used on systems equipped with the QVision display adapter, it is more practical to select another background color. Here's how:

  1. Open a command prompt by choosing the Command Prompt icon from the Main group.
2. If the command prompt opens in full screen mode, press ALT-ENTER to
   change it to a window.
3. Click the control box in the upper left corner of the command prompt
window and choose Screen Colors from the resulting drop-down menu.
4. Select Screen Background and then choose one of the first eight colors
from the left in the color bar--their high-intensity attribute is not
set. Select a color for the text, if you want to.
5. When you are satisfied with your choice(s), check the Save Configuration
   box.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Windows NT and Windows NT Advanced Server version 3.10. We are researching this problem and will post new information in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
